OUR SERVICE EMBRACES
editorial operations, picture research, cover and text design, sizing
of artwork and proofreading and indexing. In summary, we undertake the
general organisation and administration of all editorial tasks.
EDITING
We call upon the skills of editors with formal knowledge of your book’s
subject area. They correct errors in spelling and grammar and check text
citations against references. They will ensure your book receives a thorough
and informed accuracy check so that all elements conform to your house
style. We communicate directly with authors to resolve problems and ambiguities.
COPYEDITING
We can prepare a manuscript for production and we focus on achieving an
informative, consistent, reader-friendly product. We thoroughly review
text and images and we reformat tables where necessary for the sake of
clarity. Page proofs show these changes. We will also query incomplete
text and ambiguities with the author so these can be resolved and settled
at return of proofs.
PROOFREADING
Every step in the production process is checked for accuracy and adherence
to house style and design guidelines. We can collate corrections and monitor
the level of authors’ amendments. We create and enforce a detailed
style sheet for every job. 4word offers a variety of options for proofing
to customers – high-resolution laser proofs or ‘soft’
proofing – PDF files for the paperless workflow. For colour, contract
quality digital proofs are offered, calibrated to the press’s characteristics.
INDEXING
We employ specialist indexers with knowledge of a book’s subject
matter as well as publishing and typographic practices. We can create
subject, author and keyword indexes automatically and we can advise on
ideal length and design considerations like justification, indentations
and subentry treatment.
